How can I truly understand programs and their execution?

Question

I want to understand everything about assembly, linking and actual execution of programs including memory assignment, entry points and so on.
Where can I find information on that low level stuff?

I do know how to program using C and assembler languages, but I don't really know what is going on inside the tool chain yet.
