In simple terms it is as you said, they build a spectrographic fingerprint of each song and match the 5-10 sec pattern with that.

Music has acoustic patterns the same way as a piece of text has words and characters. Shazam has a huge database of digitized songs and a clever algorythm (and computing power) to match a random pattern of music against that database.

So they change music files to something like text, and search into it!

Sonic But we don't upload whole file to analyze, instead it can return all information of that music with just listening to a 5_15 seconds part of that music.
