Abbreviation of what pop is？

I am not a English speaker. I wander what does pop stand for in python. Like del stand for delete.

Pop isn't short for anything haha
It's a complete word on its own, and just means to "make a short, explosive sound" (think popcorn popping)

Rather, I believe it refers to "pop off" which Merriam Webster defines as:

1a: to die unexpectedly
b: to leave suddenly

This would be closer to the pop() function, where a list item is essentially "popped off" or removed from the list.
