If i link my html page to jquery how then i can write my JavaScript externally??

i have done this but i think it does not work i first linked to the jquery file then to the javascript but when the javascript code was embedded i had a result but then when i put it on an external file it does not anymore

no i code on VS
whatever i found out that i have to dlete all the javaScript code to be able to write code that is linked to a page linked to jquery
i do not know if this is right or wrong i just tried and worked i do not why
