What can a programmer do to earn a living?

Work for a company or work as a freelancer.

Solve problems by providing technology solutions that involve software development.

If you're in a country where currency is worth more in real terms than other countries freelancer might be the best. In countries like the UK working for a company might be better unless you're one of the best in the world or aspire to be. At that point you go with any company you want pretty much whenever you like

Or invent something really original and genuinely useful, and sell it to google/amazon/microsoft/oracle for big bucks :)
But realistically, most programmers get by as Sonic says :)
