Char pointer dereference? Char array vs Char*?

Question

Why don' we have to dereference char pointer like we do with example int* ? Code example #1.
Also, what is the difference between char* and char[] ? In some resources it says they are pretty the same, but code example #2 will fail. I know string literals are in ROM memory, but still.
