I went through HTML and CSS on multiple platforms like a boss, but its been hard for me to learn JavaScript. What do i do?

Learning JavaScript has been so hard for me. Somebody recommended i learn JQuery first, but in my mind i don't think its right cuz i believe i have to have to the basic knowledge of JavaScript first. I really need to learn it fast cuz i've been able to get some gigs that'll help put my knowledge of HTML and CSS into practice.
