How to proceed for this problem: no linear data structure?

Below is problem (described in code comment)on which I don't have clue at all to proceed with solution....

I have just heard about non linear data structure and I feel that this problem can be solved by any of them I feel.

Would be helpful if someone can throw some hint on this problem approach....

what does non-linear even mean, just count number of cycles - 1
