take a look at VS Code, it's a free and powerful editor with many nice extensions.

it very much depends on your operating system and personal tastes. Windows offers Notepad++, Atom, and a plethora of IDEs. Linux offers Gedit, Vim, EMACS, and tons of open source options I'm not sure about mac options. never used one
