I just found out about it a few days ago and I already love it more than notepad++
but as Kazbahari mentioned: it's better for beginners to start with a simple editor without auto completion.

I think you can use Sublime for web-development also. It has so many packages which help in the fast and easy website development.
List of packages:- http://tutorialzine.com/2016/10/15-awesome-sublime-text-plugins-for-web-development/
I am just telling you that I have uninstalled brackets because of sublime awesomeness. One more thing if you want to make your sublime awesome please refer to this:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDw_NRuOqEQ&list=PLfdtiltiRHWEuNHKuIheLV8efTxDm3EII
I hope you will give it a shot otherwise it is your choice. But I would like you to use Sublime for some time because I am sure if you will give it a try, you will love it.

sublime costs 70$. that's rather expensive for a text editor. especially with notepad++ and brackets as competitors. they're both free. what makes sublime worth the money, what the others don't offer?

you can install sublime without giving any money for it.
I am using it without giving any money. it's free.

For beginner, better using Microsoft Notepad. Why? Autocomplete in advanced code editor like brackets not good for learning. When you use primitive code editor like Microsoft Notepad, the more you type, the more you will remember.

I've recently found Atom which is quite good as well. decided to use it for my web learning but often I just go straight for Vim.
