Damn Netbeans!
I like books. my 2 new books on Java both focus around Netbeans. I have always used eclipse, but figured why not give netbeans a shot. downloaded and installed. the result? My Java Virtual Machine no longer worked for anything on my PC, 3 icons on my desktop flipped from what they were to "unknown" icons. JSmooth (.jar to exe program), and 2 programs I wrapped with it both stopped working with win32 exception errors. 2 problems that took a good amount of time to fix! Netbeans has been uninstalled.

never did get JSMOOTH working again. switched to a different jar wrapper and rebuilt the exe files for my 2 programs. all work fine now. Had to uninstall and re-install Java, reset java enviroment variables to get my java virtual machine working again.

Already having the current java JDK, I opted for download of just netbeans.
