What advantages does python have over octave/matlab in machine learning?

Question

I'm currently enrolled in a course that teaches basic machine learning, and octave is used. I'm also familiar to a great extent with python and the related libraries needed for ML. I would like some sort of comparison between the two, as regards application, speed, popularity, etc.
