How does being a helper work?

I just got it today. Will I get notifications if someone requires my help?

Yes. You get a message.Then you can take a look at the code problem and decide whether to accept the help request.

Maybe one a day. Sometimes not even that. It will partly depend on how many and which courses you've completed. You can also set a daily maximum. I think the default for that is five.
