Java is an effective language and it's really necessary to have a knowledge of the syntax. You can easily grasp it if you have learned any other programming language like C++. Once you get comfortable with Java, start practicing on different platforms. Only getting knowledge or learning fundamentals is not important, to be consistent you need to brush up your skills and from this, you'd get to know what types of questions are asked in the Placements.
