Code as if your source code were going to be read by someone who doesn't have a previous knowledge of the goal: structure your code, write comments, use meaningful variable names, don't clutter your code, use whitespace.

It depends on the type of program you want to create. The Android App "Programming Ideas 2" is a good start to get some ideas. For the mathematically inclined, Project Euler is another one. Programming Praxis is yet another one XD
