This is a matter of personal learning style. Years ago, I used to start by taking handwritten notes when learning a new programming language. The result was that although I had worked through a textbook, I ended up with a pile of notes, and I often spent more time searching through those notes than if I had looked up the information in the book.
Today, I approach it differently. I go through a comprehensive tutorial or the table of contents of a book and jot down only the titles of lessons that seem important or interesting to me. Then I take each lesson in isolation and try out some relatively simple examples until I understand the concept.
At some point, I've tried out so many examples that I automatically remember things, and I need to write down very little.
