Another thing to note is that employers want their programmers to be productive but that comes a price of writing messy code. In your free time, try to find as many solutions to a problem as possible. This will build your problem-solving skills and help you identify an inefficient solution to a problem and save you time trying to clean the bad code using a new better approach.

As far as commenting is concerned: Over the long, don't abuse it to comment out parts of your code.

Instead, learn to use a version control system, such as git.
