Getting into the Biz

I've always been interested in computers and took Java, VB, and C in high school and college. I didn't peruse a degree in Comp Sci because I couldn't do the prerequisite math classes for the degree. I'm 30 now, a single parent and I hate the Job I have (I'm a supervisor for an auto shop, I'm very good at it but it's ok pay and horrible hours). I recently rediscovered my love of computers and of coding after helping my daughter build a computer (simple Raspberry Pi computer) and started to teach her coding (via scratch). My question is, how can I get into this business? I know I'm very good at learning new skills, I'm a hard worker, I take pride in my work, and I have good leadership skills (including being a good follower) but how do I show an potential employer I'm worth hiring, especially since I wont have a degree? Going back to school full time isn't in the card, its too expensive and I really don't have the time. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

It's quite the common practice for freelancing. If you have a portfolio with a resume, sending a softcopy along with a formal letter through email to that specific company should at least earn a session, or at least a feedback, given vacancies exist.

You will have to prepare all your past projects to be presented to your to-be employer, making up for the lack of qualification certificates. The best case would be that your employer puts you through some kind of test to verify your skills before taking you in, should you succeed in the first step.

interesting (and coming from a hiring manager a really good idea) is this a common practice? how would one go about getting the initial interview? would I submit my "portfolio" along with a resume?
