Mostly emacs 'cause that's what my department used, so I had lots of people to ask questions of, and then momentum.
I've found some of the modern IDEs, even the free versions, have default setups that would put my old .emacs files to shame.
Then again, just you, a command line compiler, and a basic editor still has a certain magic to it...

Sublime and atom and text edit is best for fast coding
Notepad++ , brackets,code writer is good but it not fast as upper editor.
I recommend sublime text 3 for window, atmos /brackets for Mac

Was on atom and VS but I find SAAS website editors to be very convient for cross device. And no installations required 😊
