Is RPG Maker VX Ace relevant? Looks like its coded with Ruby. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I was talking with my 8 year old son about some video game ideas I have and he got pretty excited about a Five Nights at Freddy's adventure rpg I was talking about. I'm still a noob programmer so, in order to make this happen for him I decided to give RPG Maker VX Ace a try. There seems to be an abundance of resources and support available online and the software seems to use Ruby. I don't know Ruby at all, but...what do you guys think?

I'm definitely thinking of making customizations to the scripts coded in Ruby, I'm just kinda curious about what kind of a task this will be for a beginning programmer who doesn't know the language.

@Russel I've used them in the past as well, and just for basic games using what they have made available. However this time around I'm hoping to dive in and make custom edits/additions

There's a ton it can do with no coding knowledge. For a basic rpg, it works. I've used multiple versions of rpgmaker in the past, it is fun to mess with.
