linux is undoubtedly the best, but there is not much wrong with developing on other operating systems.

LINUX is a open platform for any one. When WINDOWS only gives you window of a custle, LINUX gives you whole custle.

for me I use linux because it's more flexible, but if you are targeting Windows apps or ios then you have no choice . I only use Windows for gaming.

Linux is the best for a developer. Mostly it is completely free and open source. So if you want to modify for yourself it's legal. Lots of free software in web for linux and some important software build in linux. Besides, how good can an OS be if it completely free and open source?

Linux is a general consensus when it comes to flexibility and stability. Although windows has some advantages like gaming and praticity, if you're only targeting to have a development enviroment in your PC, you will soon find out that Linux is the best choise, it has the magic console window, which allows you to manipulate each aspect of your OS, the OS itself gives the user an endless control over it. The Linux community is also way more united and active, while also being more "development-friendly". TL;DR: If you're not going for a gaming enviroment, go for Linux, it does everything windows do, but better.

what OS you use is personal choice, and doesn't matter what you use. but I would really suggest having a way to test your application to make sure it works on as many different platforms as possible so you know how your software looks and behaves

For the most part, the things are easier and much more flexible on linux. In my opinion, everybody should start learning programming main languages in the console anyway before using any IDE. But it really depends what kind of app you wanna develop. Notepad++ under windows can handle lot of things with some adjustments and plugins as well. c# you almost have no chance NOT using windows java / c/c++ python etc are almost platform independend html / css / js and jquery can easily be done on each system without any ide
