it rewards the player for being "good" (fast) at the challenge. it also provides risk / reward for rushing the answer or trying to figure them out on edge 'im not 100% sure' cases.

I see where this is coming from (I just feel the time will be too much per question then)

I would go with this idea when they shorten the time given per question then. Instead of 10 seconds shorten it to 6. Start with easy questions then progress to harder questions so that the time is worth the while
