What are all the tools, skills, languages etc. That i need to have to build a social networking site?

I want to create a social network just for me and my friends from scratch. I have only basic php, html, css and C knowledge. Please enlighten and
also give relevant link to resources.

though not as vast as facebook(i suppose only about 5k people might be using it)

I'm just a newbie at everything. As of the coding part i suppose i can manage it.
But what is database server? Any good resourse on the net to learn more about it?

It seems like the only way i know is by using javascript and the XMLhttprequest object
