I've never used it before, but I have heard that Ruby is a very robust programming language with multiple purposes, such as developing web applications with Ruby on the Rails. It can also be used like Python, and as an Object-Oriented Programming language. Above all, Ruby is a general purpose programming language, so it has many applications. Here's a more in-depth explanation on Quora. https://www.quora.com/What-can-I-do-just-with-ruby-without-learning-rails-or-other-framework/answer/Lorin-Ricker

It's a pretty good language and can used for many purposes. As for Object-Oriented Programming, I've only learned Java, which is my personal preference. Here's a link to a comparison between Ruby and Java to give some benefits of using Ruby. I've also included a link to an infographic about choosing a programming language. It doesn't say much about Ruby, but it does show a comparison of different reasons to learn and use a language. Hope this helps. http://mobile.developer.com/open/article.php/3716356/Java-vs-Ruby-a-Comparison-of-the-Key-Elements.htm http://carlcheo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/which-programming-language-should-i-learn-first-infographic.png
