Animating or programing?

I'm 17(today is my birthday) and next year at school I'm going to learn animating and a year later 3D animating. I always wanted to be an animator but lately I wanted to try programing and it seems fun. Can I somehow combain it or do I need choose between them? I know that for games you need animation but I'm not sure if it's the same process as with cartoons.

happy birthday Lel Nel. being animator is good thing but if you want to be professional you HAVE to have a knowledge of programming. many professional animation programmes support scripting(basicly programming) i suggest you to start from html5(canvas)+css+javascript for animation

Happy birthday Lel Nel! Your age is the best to try different stuff and it will help you to decide wiser for you future. You sure can handle both of them together, specially because learning to code can be done with a little time spent everyday and it's really fun.
