Molecular biologist relevance to programming

I've been curious about programming for a while now. Whilst the plethora of syntax rules has me feeling overwhelmed at times, I believe this is a skill that given more time will prove invaluable. Most data I obtain and process in my regular field of work involves DNA sequence analysis, and identifying specific repeat sequences or patterns. Everyone recommends Python in science. Is this a good starting point? Or are web-based platforms like Galaxy better suited for me personally because they are intuitive?

Python is your best friend. Check out the link below on computing tools for molecular biology: http://biopython.org
