How difficult is it to get programming/web dev job without having educational background in computer science?

Are companies declining anyone without school or job experience or will they give a try for people to prove themselves?

I don't know if I'd go as far as to say "better off", @Maxwell Anderson. However, I agree that you don't necessarily need a formal degree. Be prepared for the types of questions they may throw at you, though. Just practice write code that demonstrates your skills and understand a lot of conceptual ideas about computer science such as data structures, binary trees, logistical programming and things of that nature. Happy programming!

@JacobPowell Thanks dude, you helped me with what should I focus on. Those are important topics in CS I should be more than familiar with, if I wanna pursue a career in peogramming. Cheers!
