Create a project somewhere where you can show it off, such as projects in GitHub or publishing your own website that you designed. Many companies will gladly hire you without a degree if you can show that you know what you are doing.

You can create a GitHub account for free. They also have a tutorial on using git, which may be useful anyways once you get a job. https://guides.github.com/activities/hello-world/ Beyond that I can't help much as I actually haven't used GitHub either since I've never had a reason to post my code. As for ideas, that's always the hard part for me too. Just find something that bugs you or a repetitive task and write a program to do it for you. The code you post doesn't necessarily have to be relevant to the company, as long as it shows that you know what you are doing in a relevant language. Companies should be a little forgiving when they are looking at people who haven't had any in the job programming experience, so just do your best and show them that you can learn what they need you to.
