Learning from books, or even videos, are not as efficient for me. I'm less of a visual learner and get impatient with the slow pace that comes with a linear approach to learning.
That said, if I were to write a programming book myself, I would probably want to work with Addison Wesley or O'Reilly. I believe their standards of writing quality are much higher than other publishers of programming books.
