HTML5 What does <nav> do besides act as a human readable section?

Does <nav> have a function?

HTML5 introduces header, footer, nav, article, section and aside elements These elements are not there to indicate an element physical position on the page, but rather the nature/meaning of the element contents. Use these tags for better SEO score, which eventually would make the page rank higher on search engine results.

* material from the html course * nav tag represents a section of a page that links to other pages or to certain sections within the page. This would be a section with navigation links.
