Many people are donating to open-source developers to provide enough sources for them, so they could develop and upgrade existing projects even more.
The point of open-source is global thinking. If you made a useful thing, it will return a good outcome at some point.

PHP was created as a package tools, which could help you alot if you want to build your Personal Home Page. The executing speed and C likeness of syntax made the project attractive for web developers, and thus the PHP: Hypertext preprocessor was born. Later on, Zend Engine was created and integrated with PHP, making him look almost like he looks now. In PHP 5.0 the idea of Object-Oriented Programing started to grow, PHP started to implement C++'s abstraction, removing and adding something. PHP 6 was a failure, and due to communities vote, 6th branch was skipped, and PHP 7.0 came out with many new things to introduce: mysql improved, new version of Zend Engine and many more things.
