In Bootstrap {class="col-md-4"} is used for?

i am a beginner of bootstrap,..
i have a question that i saw a class { class="col-md-4" } is used.
the {class="col-md-4" } stands for????

Bootstrap assumes screen width as 12 columns. If you create an element with class "col-md-4", it occupies 4 out of those 12 columns. And, 'md' stands for medium sized devices.
