I thought I might provide an answer (that will actually display) for the latter half of this question, since that post only addressed the first half of this particular question.

Good reasons to have it in your code: Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

How to find concrete examples: If you go to https://schema.org/docs/full.html and pick one you might be interested in using (e.g. CreativeWork), then scroll all the way down to the bottom. If there are no examples there, then Schema.org hasn't gotten around to posting them for that particular Schema yet.
