http://www.codingdojo.com/blog/9-most-in-demand-programming-languages-of-2016/ SQL Java Javascript C# Python C++ PHP iOS Ruby on Rails Places they're used in the article. For perspective, Josh Loschen's comment on that article reads: "There may be alot of “Demand” for Java but what this article doesn’t tell you is that it also has a huge supply since most colleges teach it. If you want a high salary you should learn the languages where supply doesn’t meet demand like iOS and Ruby." I'd probably identify where in the world you want to work/live, then use this to help you choose languages.

Nowadays according to the statistics, the most popular programming languages are Java and C#. Their features allow performing the tasks of high complexity. The history of Java is very long and deep, so many people consider that Java is obsolete, and it can be replaced by other more modern solutions. On the other hand, Java developers are everywhere, and their job is in a great demand. C# language is younger than Java, but it still has a lot of adherents. Which language to choose? Have a look at this useful article where the reason of Java and C# popularity is described as well as their common properties, and differences, pros, and cons. http://computoolsglobal.com/blog/java-vs-c/
