I remember people thinking tools like FrontPage (R.I.P.) and Flash (R.I.P.) and Web Expressions (R.I.P.) would eliminate the need for web developers. It was quite the opposite.
CMSs like Wix or Square will serve general use cases with simple cookie cutter templates and basic capabilities. But, these reach their limits quickly once the needs of the site owner exceeds the limitations of the cookie cutter capabilities.
One example is the powerful need to differentiate from competing websites using the same or similar CMSs.
WordPress is a good start for many websites. But most of the large and popular ones have more custom development than you would realize.
Having built many custom plugins and a few custom themes for WordPress, I can say that the demand is very high for the short supply of experienced WordPress developers.
Simply put, CMSs serve a completely different market of users who can work within the limited parameters of that CMS.
If anything, web development demand has only gone up over the years.

Was just about to pose this question...(then I used search) 🤔 I've created and ran a big website years ago before I even discovered web developing and knew exactly what coding was (with WordPress). That's probably another reason why I didn't consider it back then. Most people don't need anything too complex to start a simple business page or blog.
