I suggest that you give Pygame a try first, since you will pass more time with actual coding than in a game engine environment. Then when you get used to how game logic works you can of course try a game engine such as Unity ( which is great in my opinion ) but with that you should also start learning how to create 3d models and animations, or 2d sprites for 2d games and all that stuff ( unless you only use and/or buy pre made models from other people or have a friend that does that for you). Finally you can even start using Opengl or Direct x, so you won't depend on a game engine "limitations", but it takes a lot of time to learn that. Hope this answer is useful for you.
