Computer literacy (including, but not only considering programming) is important for the same reason centuries ago it was important to be able to read and write.

One does not starve unless he can read and write even today, ok, but how much poorer of chances and more limited in scope would be your life without these skills?

Coding is an incredible skill: you can get it for free (as I did from sololearn), it is insanely empowering ("the closest thing to a superpower we can now have"), it can give you a nice and rewarding job, it brings you in touch with smart people making you smarter too in the process and, all in all, it makes a better citizen, a better person and a better human being out of you.

And if you think I am a little too enthusiastic, then again go back and think how you would live your life without the "magic" of converting strange symbols to sounds and concepts (reading and writing, as seen by a caveman).
