Only <br> is valid in Html5. Before Html5 <br/> was mandatory for XHtml, tolerated in Html. Anyway, <br/> is widely still supported in actual browsers which are mandatory to be permissive and auto-correct invalid codes, but in an Html5 document (with the right <!doctype>), <br/> will fail validation of w3c...

<br> is correct because it is an empty element which means it does not required any closing tag .
