It's used as a prefix originates from Greek which means false/fake in general. (e.g. Pseudocode is not really a working code, Pseudoscience is not proven etc.) In CSS we use the term pseudo-class/element to identify selectors that's not the DOM itself but its state/behaviour or relationship. For example, ".abc:hover" targets on the DOM of abc class when it was hovered while "div:first-child" targets on every first descendent of the div element(s). 😉
