I wonder how long it takes for game developer's to make a game but don't have the knowledge to try it out myself though.

Depends on the size of the game and the size of the team. Most indie developers try to make a medium size game in around a year so they don’t waste money or resources

How long is a piece of string?

Final Fantasy 15 took 10 years to make.
My current game, once I start serious development, will take under a year.
My published game took about 6 months.
If I recall correct, Silent Hill took 3 years. Most games take that long, but it depends on more than code -- which is the easy bit. Scenario may be modified because of cultural changes during development, artists may bail. It is not easy doing 3D and composing music is hard enough, let alone recording the performance.

So how long is that piece of string?
