Because -6 is a negative number and 3 is a positive number. Negative numbers are those which are less than 0 and positive numbers are those which are greater than 0. All negative numbers are considered smaller than their positive opposites. -6 < 6 -6 < 0 -6 < 1 -6 < 3 3 > -6 This is all true!
