What is MAYA? What are it's uses?

I saw my friend posting some 3D images saying he made it in maya!! and It took him 3months to build it. Can anyone please explain what maya is and what are its uses?

BTW about the price 1,500 USD that is if you are using it for commercial use under your name if you just want to learn modeling and you are not making money off it then it is free to use software.
