What does **X mean?

in the chapter list comprehension they use a formula of [i**3 for i in range] to create a list, but i cant for the love if me figure out what ** does. Can someone please tell me this?

is more like saying 4 multiplies itself 2 times.
in mathematics u would say its 4 to the power of 2
