It is a dynamic interpreted programming language that is truly general-purpose.

It is used as a scripting language, in the gaming industry, in academia, back-end web development, in AI, in scientific (ie physics, chemistry etc) research and so on.

The only limits of Python are speed (it's rather slow) and distance from the underlying hardware. In areas where that is not needed Python is generally a great fit.
