Someone can explain to me deeply what is the api and what are the meanings of the instructions in js of the html course?

In the last part of html course specifically in HTML5 i didn't understand the meaning of the functions in js include when i finished that course. Another thing that i do not have clear is what is the api, how it works and what relation have whit html. I thank everyone in advance.
