my first interest in ruby is game development, RPG Maker engine use Ruby for scripting. or if you're into web ruby haa Ruby on Rails which still pretty popular, even though node.js start to gain much popularity
other than that i cant say much, its pretty flexible but pretty hard to maintain if you're not careful, and not so fast because its flexibility.
