How can i use Windows 10 and Ubuntu on the same PC (separate drives) without using a virtual machine?

NO VIRTUAL MACHINE! I have an HP 450 G2 PC with i5 microprocessor, 4GB RAM, and 500GB HDD running Windows 10, and i wish to do a (portable) full installation of Ubuntu on an EXTERNAL HDD from the same PC without losing my current OS. Please help!

Run linux natively by dual-booting. WSL has a lot of limitations. I run 2 distros of linux alongside my windows partition (which I rarely use now).

Considering that i'm going to install the linux os on an external HDD, i don't think it will be necessary for me to partition my primary HDD (containing windows 10)
