Getting hired as a Web Developer.

Question

I am aware of the fact that if you want to become a self learnt Web developer you need a portfolio of you work and possibly references from clients or freelancing experience. What sort of projects could I do specifically for my portfolio, any good freelanceing websites or other places to gte experience? Possibly your opinion on these too would help thanks.
