Nope, using free domain means you're using someone else property. They could give it to you for free but they can take it back instantly. Buying a domain name on the other hand makes you the owner of the name and you have full control over it. Another reason of why you need your own domain is that it'll avoid your visitor to lost track of your site whereabout when the free domain get taken away or the hosting website does not provide it anymore. Well if you're using freenom, you could set the expiry date up to 1 year then you need to renew it and it stated there that the renewal is free of charge :/

personally I have never built a websit but I am planning to do so after I complete the HTML5 and JS courses, I will not pay a penny for hosting until I am sure what am I doing
after that when you build a real website that you want to gain fame or money from I believe you would better buy your own domain, after all it doesn't cost all that much (most of the time)
