Why is programming hard to learn?

Every complex task takes time and effort to learn: Playing the violin, constructing a reactor, operating on the open heart... why should programming be different?

If it was easy, many people would know how to do it; there probably wouldn't be as many apps about it; you wouldn't be here, but learning something else that's valuable (==difficult) somewhere else.
